Washington/New Delhi: America’s 250th anniversary arrives at a defining moment in international politics.

During much of the twentieth century and the opening decades of the twenty-first century, the United States shaped the global security order through conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, military operations against the Islamic State, counter-terrorism campaigns across the Middle East and Africa, and continued strategic competition with Russia and China.

These conflicts transformed Washington from a nation founded on resistance to imperial rule into the world’s most influential military and diplomatic power.

The anniversary also comes only weeks after the United States was drawn into one of the most consequential crises in the Middle East in recent years.

Following direct military exchanges involving the United States, Israel and Iran, Washington has continued efforts to prevent further escalation while pursuing negotiations to preserve freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Temporary de-escalation has reduced immediate tensions, the region remains volatile, with Tehran warning that any renewed attack would trigger a swift response.

Against this backdrop, Freedom 250 is more than a commemorative celebration. It is also a demonstration of American statecraft.

The military flyovers, naval reviews and patriotic ceremonies are intended not only for domestic audiences but also for allies and adversaries abroad. They reinforce the image of a nation that continues to see itself as the principal guarantor of the international order, even as that role faces growing challenges.

For allies across Europe and the Indo-Pacific, the celebrations underscore America’s enduring military and political influence.

Moreover, strategic competitors such as China, Russia and Iran, they represent a reminder that Washington continues to project power far beyond its borders, despite increasing political polarisation at home.
