New Delhi/Paris: French artificial intelligence startup Mistral AI raises $830 million in debt financing to build a large data center near Paris as it accelerates Europe’s push for AI infrastructure independence.

The company plans to construct the facility in Bruyères-le-Châtel, a town in the Essonne department south of the French capital. The data center will run on advanced chips supplied by Nvidia and is scheduled to become operational in the second quarter of 2026.

Mistral first signals its intent to build its own data infrastructure last year, when CEO Arthur Mensch says the company explores multiple financing routes to support long-term compute capacity. The current debt raise marks a significant shift from equity fundraising toward infrastructure-backed financing.

The move reflects rising demand from governments, enterprises, and research institutions across Europe that seek to build customized AI environments instead of relying on third-party cloud providers.

In a recent statement, Mensch says scaling infrastructure within Europe remains critical to maintaining AI innovation and technological autonomy on the continent. He adds that Mistral will continue to invest heavily in this area as demand for sovereign AI capacity grows.

Last month, the company announces plans to invest $1.4 billion in Sweden to expand AI infrastructure, including additional data centers. Mistral aims to deploy 200 megawatts of compute capacity across Europe by 2027.

To date, Mistral raises more than €2.8 billion ($3.1 billion) from investors including General Catalyst, ASML, Andreessen Horowitz, Lightspeed, and DST Global, according to Crunchbase data.

With this new data center project, Mistral positions itself not only as a model developer but also as a key infrastructure builder in Europe’s rapidly expanding AI ecosystem.
