Clashes Erupt in Manipur’s Churachandpur After Protests Against New Deputy CM Turn Violent

Churachandpur

Churachandpur, Manipur / New Delhi: Tensions escalated in the Kuki‑dominated district of Churachandpur on Thursday evening, 5 February 2026, when a large group of protesters clashed with security forces amid anger over an MLA from their community being inducted as Deputy Chief Minister in the newly formed state government.

Protesters gathered near Tuibong Bazaar, torched discarded materials including tyres, raised slogans against Nemcha Kipgen — the Kuki MLA who took oath as Deputy CM— and expressed discontent over political decisions they feel ignore local issues.

As security forces attempted to disperse the crowd, stone‑pelting broke out, prompting a baton charge by personnel deployed at the scene. Officials said at least two people sustained minor injuries during the confrontations.

A senior police officer noted that the situation remained tense, with additional forces rushed in to bring the unrest under control.

The protests reflect deeper political and ethnic sensitivities in Manipur, where sections of the Kuki community have repeatedly voiced dissatisfaction with recent political developments. In late January, thousands of students and local leaders marched through Churachandpur, demanding a “political solution” rather than the formation of a so‑called “popular government.”

Security has been tightened in several parts of the state as authorities monitor developments closely, with law enforcement urging calm and restraint from all sides.
