Thousands of Farmers March Toward Mumbai Over Unfulfilled Government Promises

Farmers March

New Delhi / Maharashtra: Thousands of farmers have launched a fresh march from Nashik toward Mumbai, protesting the non-implementation of promises made by the Maharashtra government on key agrarian issues.

The mobilisation was organised by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), with farmers citing commitments made after previous long marches that remain unfulfilled.

Farmer leaders say assurances given by the state government following the 2018 Kisan Long March, including action on land rights under the Forest Rights Act and irrigation projects have not been materialised. They argue that basic commitments on water diversion, land title recognition and other support measures are yet to be executed.

The march began in Nashik district and is expected to proceed toward Mumbai, with participants emphasising historical precedents of long marches pressing the state on agrarian issues. Organisers say the protest reflects broader rural dissatisfaction with unfulfilled electoral and policy pledges.

This renewed mobilisation adds to ongoing farmer unrest in Maharashtra, where demands for loan waivers, assured crop prices and timely compensation have been prominent in protests across different districts in recent months.

The state government has engaged with some farmer groups on issues such as loan waivers, forming committees and setting timelines for decisions, but tensions persist as protests continue and broader demands remain unresolved.
