Ministry of Defence on Sunday said Army Hospital (Research & Referral) commissioned a Ring Gantry-based Linear Accelerator to strengthen advanced cancer care services for serving military personnel, veterans and their dependents.
Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh attended the commissioning ceremony at the hospital’s Department of Radiation Oncology on May 25.
The Ministry said the advanced radiotherapy system is expected to improve in-house treatment capacity at the hospital, which handles a significant patient load.
The Linear Accelerator supports modern radiotherapy techniques, including Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy, Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy, Image-Guided Radiation Therapy, Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy and Stereotactic Radiosurgery. Officials said the technology enables precise radiation delivery to tumour sites while reducing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues, improving treatment outcomes and patient care.
The Ministry described the procurement as a major upgrade for the Armed Forces Medical Services, replacing older equipment that has now been decommissioned. It added that oncology centres under AFMS are also being modernised in a phased manner.
Director General Armed Forces Medical Services Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin and Commandant of Army Hospital (R&R) Lieutenant General Avinash Das were also present during the event.
