Pakistan Link Row: Himanta Sarma Targets Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi
New Delhi: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife have links connected to Pakistan.
The statement triggered sharp reactions from the opposition and intensified the BJP-Congress war of words.
Addressing reporters, Sarma claimed that Gogoi’s wife had been associated with an organisation or firm that, according to him, had Pakistan-linked connections. The Chief Minister said the matter raises concerns of national security and has been referred to the Union government for further examination.
Sarma stated that the issue warrants a detailed probe by central agencies, asserting that any potential foreign links involving public representatives must be scrutinised thoroughly. He added that the state government would cooperate fully with any investigation initiated at the national level.
The Assam Chief Minister confirmed that the matter has been formally brought to the attention of the Centre for what he described as a “national security review.” BJP leaders in the state amplified the allegations through press briefings and social media posts, calling for transparency from the Congress MP.
Evening political briefings saw the BJP aggressively pushing the issue, framing it as a matter of national interest rather than partisan politics.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi strongly denied the allegations, calling them “baseless” and “politically motivated.” He accused the BJP of attempting to divert attention from governance issues by levelling unsubstantiated claims.
Gogoi maintained that neither he nor his family has any unlawful foreign connections and said the accusations are aimed at damaging his credibility. He also questioned the timing of the claims, suggesting they are part of a broader political strategy.
The controversy quickly gained traction across Assam’s political landscape, with Congress leaders backing Gogoi and accusing the BJP of running a smear campaign. BJP leaders, meanwhile, reiterated their demand for a thorough investigation.
As of now, there has been no official statement from central agencies confirming the initiation of a formal probe. The matter remains a political flashpoint in Assam, with both sides standing firm on their positions.
