Opposition Plans No-Confidence Motion Against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla

New Delhi: Opposition parties in the INDIA bloc actively explore a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla amid escalating tensions in Parliament.

Leaders, including Congress president and Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, discuss the move during a key meeting on February 9, 2026, citing procedural concerns and alleged bias.

The decision stems from repeated clashes in the Lok Sabha, particularly after Speaker Birla disallows Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi from quoting or speaking on former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane’s unpublished memoir.

This triggers protests, leading to the suspension of eight Opposition MPs. Opposition sources accuse the Speaker of partisan conduct, denying space for opposition voices, failing to act against certain BJP MPs, and making unsubstantiated charges against Congress women MPs.

The motion, likely under Article 94-C of the Constitution, targets Birla’s handling of debates, including the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address.

Opposition floor leaders coordinate strategy in Kharge’s chamber, with Rahul Gandhi and others present. Congress leader K.C. Venugopal hints at imminent “action,” emphasising the lack of fairness in the House.

Government sources rebut the claims, defending the Speaker’s actions as justified amid security concerns and disruptions. The Budget Session faces multiple adjournments, with much legislative work derailed. If tabled, the motion requires a majority in Lok Sabha for passage, though success remains uncertain given NDA’s numerical strength.
