Nipah Virus Cases Reported in West Bengal, 196 Contacts Under Watch

NIPAH

Kolkata/ New Delhi: Health authorities in West Bengal are on alert after fresh cases of Nipah virus infection were reported in the state. At least two confirmed cases have emerged this year, including healthcare workers, prompting intensified surveillance and containment measures.

Officials have identified and are monitoring 196 contacts linked to the confirmed cases.

According to health department sources, none of the traced individuals have shown symptoms or tested positive so far.

Teams are conducting daily health checks, and isolation protocols have been activated as a precautionary step.

State health authorities have stepped up surveillance in affected districts. Airport health screening has also been strengthened to detect potential symptomatic travellers and prevent wider spread.

Hospitals have been instructed to maintain strict infection control practices, especially for frontline medical staff.

Nipah virus, a zoonotic infection, has previously caused outbreaks in India, most notably in Kerala. The virus can spread through close contact with infected individuals, contaminated food, or fruit products such as date palm sap that may be exposed to infected bats.

Symptoms can range from fever and respiratory distress to severe neurological complications in some cases. Early detection and isolation remain key to preventing transmission.

Health officials have stated that the situation is under close watch and urged the public to avoid panic while following hygiene advisories. Further updates are expected as surveillance continues.

Authorities emphasise that rapid response measures are in place to contain any potential spread.
