Iran Launches ‘Jame Jam-1’ Satellite Into Orbit From Baikonur
Kazakhstan/ New Delhi: Iran’s ‘Jame Jam-1’ telecommunications satellite has been successfully launched into orbit aboard a Proton-M rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
The satellite is reported to be the first geostationary communications satellite operated by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB). Positioned in geostationary orbit nearly 36,000 kilometres above Earth, the satellite will remain fixed over a specific point, allowing uninterrupted television broadcasting and communications coverage.
The launch marks a significant development in Iran’s space and broadcasting infrastructure. By deploying its own geostationary platform, IRIB aims to strengthen independent transmission capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign satellite services.
The mission was carried out using Russia’s Proton-M heavy-lift rocket, a launch vehicle frequently used for commercial and government satellite deployments. The liftoff from Baikonur underscores ongoing space cooperation between Moscow and Tehran amid broader geopolitical tensions.
Further technical details about the satellite’s operational lifespan and coverage footprint are expected to be released by Iranian authorities.
