Retired IPS Officer Amitabh Das Arrested Over NEET Student Case
Patna / New Delhi: Bihar Police arrested retired Indian Police Service officer Amitabh Kumar Das on February 14, following a raid at his residence linked to the ongoing investigation into the suspicious death of a NEET aspirant.
Police conducted a search of Das’s Patna home on February 13, examining materials connected to the case before taking him into custody the following day. Das had recently made repeated public statements alleging involvement of prominent individuals in the case, including demanding a DNA test of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s son.
Authorities described his claims as unverified and potentially disruptive to the sensitive investigation.
The NEET aspirant was found unconscious in her hostel room in Patna on January 6, 2026, and later died in hospital on January 11. Initial reports suggested suicide, but forensic evidence indicated trauma and possible sexual assault.
Public outrage and protests across Bihar led to the case being transferred from a Special Investigation Team to the Central Bureau of Investigation, which is now conducting a comprehensive inquiry including forensic analysis, witness interviews, and review of digital evidence.
Police said Das’s arrest was necessary to prevent circulation of unverified allegations that could influence witnesses or disrupt public order. Authorities have not confirmed any official connection between the chief minister’s family and the NEET case.
The family of the deceased student has reported receiving threatening letters on February 14 and February 17, 2026, prompting increased security around their home in Jehanabad district. The CBI continues to examine all evidence carefully, with no announced timeline yet for filing its findings.
The case remains one of the most politically sensitive investigations in Bihar this year, with Das’s arrest adding a new dimension to the ongoing inquiry.
