Blinkit Booked Under Arms Act in Delhi Knife Case

BLINKIT

New Delhi: Delhi Police have registered an FIR under the Arms Act against quick-commerce platform Blinkit after investigators found that button-lock knives sold through its app exceeded the legally permitted blade length and were allegedly used in two separate murder cases in the national capital.

According to officials from Delhi Police, the case was registered at Khyala Police Station in West Delhi after accused persons in two homicide investigations told police during questioning that the knives used in the crimes had been purchased via the Blinkit app.

During the probe, officers decided to verify the claim by placing an order for the same model of knife while posing as ordinary customers.

The knife was delivered within minutes to an address near the police station. On examination, officers found that the blade measured approximately 8 cm in length, exceeding the maximum permissible limit of 7.62 cm prescribed under existing regulations governing the sale of such weapons without a licence. Police said the width of the blade also crossed the allowed limit. Under the Arms Act and related notifications, knives beyond specified dimensions require proper authorisation, and their sale without compliance can attract penal provisions.

Following the test purchase, police registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Arms Act, including Sections 25, 54 and 59, which deal with unlawful possession and sale of prohibited arms and violations of licence conditions.

Investigators subsequently conducted raids at multiple Blinkit dark stores in Delhi and recovered several button-lock knives matching the description.

Police are now examining the supply chain and vendor onboarding process to determine how the knives were listed and stocked on the platform. Officials said they are looking into whether the items were uploaded by third-party sellers and what internal compliance checks were in place before allowing the product to go live.

Digital transaction records and delivery logs are also being scrutinised as part of the ongoing investigation.

Blinkit has not issued a detailed public statement at the time of reporting. The investigation remains underway, and further legal action will depend on the findings of the probe.
