Suicide Blast at Shia Mosque in Islamabad Kills 31, Injures Nearly 170
Islamabad / New Delhi: A powerful suicide blast tore through a Shia mosque in Islamabad’s Tarlai area during Friday prayers, killing at least 31 people and injuring around 169 others, officials said.
Police said the attacker was stopped at the mosque gate by worshippers before detonating explosives, triggering a massive explosion inside the crowded prayer hall. The blast caused widespread panic as debris scattered across the premises and worshippers rushed to help the wounded.
Emergency services rushed to the scene. Authorities declared emergencies at major hospitals, including PIMS and Polyclinic, to handle the influx of casualties. Several victims remain in critical condition, doctors said.
Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon confirmed that rescue teams acted immediately and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals. Security forces sealed off the area while forensic teams began collecting evidence.
President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the attack, calling it a “crime against humanity,” and expressed grief over the loss of innocent lives.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly denounced the bombing and ordered a full investigation, directing authorities to provide the best possible medical care to the injured. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also condemned the attack and instructed officials to prioritise treatment for survivors.
Police believe the incident was a suicide bombing. No group has claimed responsibility so far.
The attack comes amid rising militant violence in Pakistan, with minority communities frequently targeted in sectarian assaults. Authorities have increased security across Islamabad and launched a manhunt to identify those behind the attack.
Officials warned that casualty figures may rise further as hospitals continue treatment and rescue operations conclude.
